BIWTC was established in 1972 for the operation, promotion and development of coastal and inland shipping and water transport services in Bangladesh. It provides safe and efficient shipping and water transport services on coastal and inland water routes and carry out all forms of activities connected with or ancillary to such shipping and water transport. The Corporation had its head office at Motijheel, which is currently under redevelopment process. This is why the temporary head office of the Corporation has been set up at Fairlee House. The site is about 2.3 acres (7 Bigha). BIWTC has allocated a fund for the development of high-rise commercial condominium, auditorium, community center, office building and residential building at the site.
